Who operates this service
MyLocationTracker is a product of Mental Monkey Software (ABN 13 151 087 978), an independent Australian software business operating since 2017. Mental Monkey Software is the entity responsible for personal information handled through this site and the MyLocationTracker apps. For privacy enquiries, email [email protected].
What we collect
- Account details — display name, email address, an optional recovery email address, and mobile number, collected when you register.
- Profile photo — an optional avatar image you upload, shown to other members of your family circles and on the map.
- Location data — when you enable tracking in the mobile app, your device sends its precise location (latitude and longitude, timestamp, and reported accuracy). This is the core of the service and is treated as sensitive information. See Background location collection below for how and when this happens.
- Device information — a device identifier, the device name you choose, the app version, and your tracking-cadence preset (how often the device reports), so your locations can be attributed to the right device and reported at the chosen frequency.
- Device battery level — when tracking is enabled, your device reports its battery percentage and whether it is charging, so your family can be alerted to a low battery or a device that has stopped reporting.
- Family and feature data — family circles you create or join and your membership and role within them, places (geofence coordinates, radius, and polygon shapes), routes (polylines) and their schedules, temporary share links you create, and the notifications and alerts generated for you.
- Payment data — paid plans are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your card number; we hold only your subscription status and plan tier.
- Website analytics — on the marketing site only, and only if you accept the cookie banner (see Cookies below).
- Service logs — standard technical logs (such as request times and error details) used to operate and secure the service.
How we use your information
- To provide the service: showing live locations and history to you and the family circles you choose, and sending the alerts you configure (place arrivals and departures, route deviation and late alerts).
- To send service emails such as email verification and password resets.
- To manage subscriptions and billing through Stripe.
- To operate, secure, and improve the service.
We do not sell personal information, we do not share location data with advertisers, and there are no advertising networks or trackers inside the app.
Background location collection
When tracking is enabled, the app collects this phone's precise location continuously in the background — even when the app is closed or the screen is off. While background sharing is active, the app shows a persistent notification so it is always clear that location is being collected. How often the device reports is set by your family's account holder using a cadence preset (High, about every 15 seconds; Balanced, about every 60 seconds; or Battery-saver, about every 5 minutes).
On supervised (managed child) devices, tracking starts automatically when the app is opened and when the device boots, and the supervised child cannot stop it. See Children and supervised accounts below.
Children and supervised accounts
MyLocationTracker is designed for families and supports managed (supervised) child accounts that a parent or guardian — the account holder — sets up. The guardian is responsible for obtaining the child's awareness and consent as appropriate, and for using the service lawfully in their jurisdiction.
A supervised child cannot opt out of tracking and cannot delete their own account. The guardian (account holder) controls the supervised account and its data, and can delete that data at any time — see Deleting your account and data. We do not make any COPPA or GDPR-K certification claim; the model is guardian-controlled as described here.
Location data: visibility and retention
- Who can see it — your location and related data are visible to other members of the same family circle, according to each member's role. This is an expected and permitted use within the family you choose to join; it is not third-party sharing and we never sell it. Temporary public share links expose a single device's label and current position to anyone who has the link (never your name or account details), expire after at most 72 hours, and can be revoked at any time.
- How long we keep it — location history is retained according to your plan tier: Free — 24 hours; Family — 90 days; Family Plus — 730 days (2 years). Location points older than your plan's window are deleted automatically by a daily purge.
- Encrypted in transit — all data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS, so it is encrypted in transit between your device and our service.
- Map tiles are self-hosted — the map you see is served from our own infrastructure. Viewing the map never sends your position or your map activity to a third-party map provider.
- Android app uses Google Play Services for location accuracy — on Android, the app uses the Google Play Services Location API (FusedLocationProviderClient) to obtain more accurate GPS fixes by combining GPS, Wi-Fi, and cell signals on-device. This API does not send your location to Google, does not serve advertising, and does not share your data with third parties.
Cookies and tracking technologies
This section is our cookie policy.
- The app (
/app) uses only strictly necessary storage: authentication tokens and your own preferences (such as cookie-consent choice). No analytics or advertising trackers run inside the app. - The marketing site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand visits — but only after you click Accept on the cookie banner. We use Google Consent Mode v2 with analytics storage denied by default; declining (or doing nothing) means no analytics cookies are set.
- Your choice is stored locally in your browser (
mlt-cookie-consent). You can change your mind at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser, after which the banner will ask again. - There are no advertising cookies on any part of the service.
Third-party services
- Stripe — payment processing for paid plans.
- Google — optional "Sign in with Google", and Google Analytics on the marketing site when you consent.
- Mailjet — delivery of transactional email (verification, password reset).
- Cloudflare — network delivery and security in front of the service.
Each of these providers receives only what is needed for its function.
Your rights
You can access, correct, or ask us to delete your personal information — including your entire location history and account — by emailing [email protected]. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles; if you are in a jurisdiction with additional rights (such as the GDPR), we honour those too. If you are unsatisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
Deleting your account and data
You can permanently delete your account and all associated data — your profile, devices, location history, families you own, places, routes, shares, subscription record, and notifications. Delete in-app via Profile → Delete account, or visit mylocationtracker.com/delete-account. Deletion completes after a 30-day grace period, after which data is permanently purged (a minimal deletion audit record is retained for security/legal purposes).
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the service evolves. Material changes will be announced on this site. The "Last updated" date above always reflects the current version.
